Game Information

SNES - X Kaliber 2097 Box Art Front

The game takes place in the year 2097 A.D. in NEO N.Y. The city is run down and controlled by a warlord named Raptor. Raptor has unleashed an army of ruthless, mutating Morphs upon the city to enforce his brand of order. Only two special forces agents, Slash and Alix do not submit to Raptor's will. Raptor decides to hatch a plan to kidnap Alix, so Slash, and more importantly his magic X-Kaliber sword, will come to him in an attempt to try and rescue her. The game consists of two modes. The first modes gameplay consists of side-scrolling action. The player can jump and swing a sword at enemies. The player can also deflect projectiles with the sword. The game also features one on one boss fights that are set up similar to a fighting game. The second mode is a two player duel that is set up like the one on one boss fights but is between two human controlled players.

Additional Information

Featuring music by Psykosonik, a funky pop-metal-rap band, X-Kaliber 2097 puts players in the role of Slash, who must thrust, parry, slice, and swipe his way through a dark future world of mutants, morphs, and other bad guys. The sword can also release a bolt of super-powerful energy, which leaves the player vulnerable as it slowly moves across the screen. Eventually, Slash will face his twin brother, who wields a sword as powerful as the X-Kaliber. In addition to the standard side-scrolling slash-'em-up game, the cartridge contains a two-player, one-on-one fighting game in which gamers select from a variety of interesting fighters with a pleasingly offbeat assortment of attacks and weapons. For example, Tattoo uses his rose tattoo for special attacks while Kane fights using a top hat and cane. Neither game is a standout in its respective genre, but solid gameplay, realistic graphics, and a killer soundtrack make the package worthwhile.
