Game Information

Touring Car Challenge: TOCA 2 is the sequel to TOCA Championship Racing. Rather than focusing on traditional racing elements, Codemasters has taken the mechanics and structure of British Touring Car Championship and slapped it into a PlayStation CD. Because of this, the TOCA series is considered a niche racing game; something on the outskirts of the mainstream.

Additional Information

Developed by Codemasters, Touring Car Challenge: TOCA 2 follows up TOCA Championship Racing by incorporating more vehicles, gameplay options, and updated rules pertaining to the British Touring Car Championship league.

Among the various gameplay options and racing types include the Championship, Challenge, Support Car Championship, Time Trial, Link-up Game, and Test Track modes. One of the lesser-known features is the Support Car Championship; two cars of the same model (with differing colors) compete at seven racing venues. Whoever wins each race is crowned the ultimate driver!

The Championship mode is a season-spanning tournament with restrictions and structuring based on official 1998 rulings set by the BTCC. TOCA 2 is different from its predecessor in that the Qualifying-Sprint race has been shortened to one lap with a rolling start and the Feature race has been extended with mandatory pit stops. Progression from meeting to meeting (up to 13 meetings depending on the difficulty level) is based on a points system where the minimum for each event is 15 points. Incorporating real life raceways, meetings include Thruxton, Brands Hatch Indy, Silverstone International, and Oulton Park Fosters.

Challenge is a heated checkpoint-based competition of skill, precision, and your ability to reach the various points before time runs out. Additionally, the Link-up Game allows players to hook up two PlayStation consoles with two television sets. By doing this, you and a friend will have four-player access (split-screen action on each console) to the Championship, Challenge, Single Race, and Time Trial modes!

Players can also select and upgrade one of 16 realistically modeled vehicles. Designed for the armchair mechanic, upgrading spans brake balances, downforce ratios, gears, and suspension. After customizing the vehicle, you can select the Test Track option to see how it handles and performs on the various tracks.

Touring Car Challenge: TOCA 2 makes full use of the Dual Shock Analog Controller by incorporating analog controls with engine vibrations; racing wheels are also compatible.
