Broken Helix follows the exploits of Jake Burton (voiced by Bruce Campbell), an explosives expert tasked with diffusing a series of bombs deep within a secure Area 51 facility, planted by scientists seemingly gone insane. It soon becomes apparent that not everything is as it seems, as players find themselves embroiled in a dangerous conspiracy. Viewed from a third-person perspective, Jake must make his way through the facility while acquiring crucial items and color-coded keys to access restricted areas, sneaking past security cameras in order to remain undetected and dispatching any hostile enemies he encounters.
Along the way, Jake will need to glean information from surviving scientists and reporters, or assist them in order to complete vital objectives. However, their reactions toward Jake will differ depending on whether they're spoken to in an angry or affable manner. Strewn throughout the installation are health, energy, and armor items necessary to keep Jake alive and to power his weapons, which comprise a plasma rifle, grenades, and a flamethrower, in addition to his standard-issue, high-voltage stun rifle.
Many of Jake's tasks within the facility are timed and will result in his death if not completed quickly enough. To aid in the completion of these tasks, maintenance and assault robots can be remotely activated and controlled by the player, to access particular areas of the facility or to eradicate hostile entities. Saving the game is accomplished through the use of Save CDs acquired during the quest, and one is expended for each save. Broken Helix offers four different endings that can be achieved based upon actions within the game. | Voice-over provided by Bruce Campbell of Evil Dead fame
