Game Information

The video game takes place in the "deepest and darkest" part of Africa during the year 1871. Nations were sending their explorers to uncover the last remaining continent that was not fully mapped by the European superpowers. Dr. Livingston abandoned his original quest to uncover the temple of Am-Zutuk; who was worshipped as a god amongst the indigenous African people. The player, as reporter Henry Morton Stanley (after Sir Stanley, 1841-1904), is exploring the last of the mysterious jungle regions for European colonization when his professor, Dr. Livingston (patterned after Dr. David Livingstone, with an ending "e"), gets kidnapped by some African tribesmen. Now, the player must explore one of the last uncharted parts of Africa to save his mentor and end an era of exploring Africa. The player is automatically equipped with an gyrocopter to make those tricky landings much smoother.

Additional Information

Welcome to the African jungle known as the Congo. You are about to experience (or at least read about) Stanley: The Search for Dr. Livingston, Electro Brain Corps.' original "Cart of Darkness."

The time is 1870, an era when nations sent their best explorers to discover new lands, brave fierce animals and explore unknown civilizations, all with the purpose of claiming these newly found lands for their respective mother countries. One of these explorers was Dr. Livingston, who abandoned his original quest to fulfill a personal desire, that of rediscovering the lost temple of Am-Zutuk. This temple was home to a great magic, which when looked upon could give a man great wisdom and power. Unfortunately, the temple was also home to ghosts and demons.

During his grand expedition, Dr. Livingston disappeared. It is up to you, newspaper reporter Henry M. Stanley, to find the good doctor and possibly uncover the mystery of the lost temple. You begin the game equipped with a backpack (which contains an auto-gyro copter for soft landings), Dr. Livingston's notes and your fists. Throughout the game you can add a number of weapons to your arsenal, including stronger fists, a machete, a blowgun, rocks, bows and arrows, a club, spears, knives and a battle axe. These will come in handy when you are battling the soldiers, guards, giant spiders and other jungle natives.

In addition to weapons, you can find extra lives, hearts, keys, maps, notes, water, lightning stones, a grapnel and rope, shields, an iron breastplate, and much more. These items will help you do such things as access areas, replenish your health, open doors and climb perilous cliffs. You must discover on your own what many of the items do as you run, jump, climb, crawl and otherwise make your way through the perilous jungle. From time to time you will need to communicate with characters to access news and vital information.
