Game Information

The object of this video game is to successfully launch and fly one of NASA's historic Space Shuttles. Gameplay is composed of several different types of missions, each broken up into short mini-games. The first part of the game requires the player to activate oxygen and hydrogen pumps as well as get additional crew members into the shuttle within a strict time limit by moving an elevator up and down and avoiding moving bumpers. Then, the player must successfully launch the shuttle into space by performing quick time events that correspond to particular shuttle launch maneuvers such as booster rocket separation. Once in space, one of several missions will be played where the player must control the astronaut by maneuvering him around hazards, replenish his air supply before the timer runs out, and deliver components for the International Space Station to their correct locations. A cosmonaut from the Soviet Union must also be rescued in the game. Finally, the player must land the shuttle by again performing Quick Time Events that correspond to landing maneuvers before finally landing at Edwards Air Force Base.

Additional Information

Congratulations! You got such high marks on your training performance that you have been promoted to Shuttle Commander. Your job is to lead a series of Alpha Priority missions that are vital to the welfare of the United States, U.S.-Soviet relations, and the growth of the space program itself.

After a mandatory security check, your mission begins. In stage one, you must activate the space shuttle's oxygen and hydrogen pumps, open the orbiter hatch, and escort your crew into the orbiter. The second stage is the lift-off. Here, you must ensure your craft's ability to break gravitational pull and enter orbit. In stage three you must launch a satellite, begin the initial phase of space station construction, retrieve and re-launch the satellite, begin the second phase of space station construction, rescue the Soviet Cosmonaut, and complete space station construction.

The final stage of the game deals with reentry. Here you must close the cargo bay doors, turn the orbiter around, de-orbit burn to slow down, pitch the orbiter nose up, fall into the Earth's atmosphere, perform an S-turn, approach the runway, deploy the landing gear, land the craft, and apply the brakes. To complete some of the missions, you must first familiarize yourself with the Shuttle Guidance System that is located in the instruction manual.
