NFL Blitz: Special Edition, a rental-store exclusive, continues the seven-on-seven action found in previous games in the over-the-top football series. Features include updated teams, schedules, and uniforms to reflect the 2001-2002 season as well as four modes of play: Arcade, Season, Tournament, and Party Games. Players can also create nine plays on offense and six plays on defense, setting each athlete's route and position on the field before naming the play and then assigning it to a team.
Arcade has up to four players competing in a single game, while Season follows a traditional 16-game NFL schedule with up to eight teams being tracked at once. Tournament supports up to eight players in a choice of single-elimination or best two-of-three formats. Options include adjustable game difficulty, quarter lengths, help boxes, and whether or not a timer is used to select plays. As in previous titles, user records can be stored to track personal winning steaks.
Party Games mode consists of three mini-games to test one's prowess on offense and defense. The first game, 1st & Goal Frenzy, has players attempting to score touchdowns from specific areas on the field. The game begins on the ten-yard line and moves back ten yards each time a touchdown is made. Goal Line Stand is played from the defense's point of view as players try to stop the offense from advancing past the 50-yard line. The final game, QB Challenge, involves quickly passing to three receivers before time expires. | Nintendo 64-exclusive "Special Edition" version
